Over 30,000 locals live on Hengqin, 800 study there

Hengqin is now home to over 30,000 Macau ID holders, according to updates provided by Cao Jinfeng, deputy director of the cooperation zone’s executive committee.

The Hengqin official took questions from the media on Thursday during an ongoing promotional campaign highlighting opportunities in Macau.

Since the island’s independent customs arrangements came into force in March 2024, Hengqin has recorded a daily average flow of over 260,000 travellers as of April this year.

Cao also revealed that annual tourist arrivals currently ranged between 16 million and 18 million.

In terms of education and employment, the island receives 800 students and approximately 1,800 working professionals.

Official records show that an estimated 100,000 border crossers rely on the Hengqin checkpoint daily, a quarter of whom hold Macau IDs.

Meanwhile, daily vehicular traffic reaches 12,000, with 80 per cent consisting of Macau-registered cars.

Since May 2024, mainland Chinese nationals have been eligible for a multi-entry visa for tour groups travelling between Hengqin and Macau. Since its implementation, this tour group scheme has recorded over 160,000 traveler movements.

The official updates also touched upon the 240-hour visa-free transit policy announced by the central government last November.

As of the end of last month, the number of foreign travellers reached nearly 140,000, representing a year-on-year surge of 69.7 per cent.

According to Wu Chuangwei, the official responsible for Hengqin’s economic development, visitor arrivals from certain source markets even grew approximately tenfold.

In terms of trade and commerce, Hengqin’s imports and exports exceeded a combined RMB28.8 billion between January and May this year, marking a year-on-year increase of nearly 46 per cent.

Currently, there are 8,000 Macau-funded enterprises operating on the island, while customs-registered businesses have topped 2,400, a jump of over 48 per cent compared to the period before the “two-line” customs framework was implemented.
